Burundi - Second Social Action Project : environmental assessment (French)

The Second Social Action Project in Burundi entails construction of schools, health facilities, and minor related construction works concerning water supply, as well as small scale reforestation, aimed at improving the livelihoods of local populations. Nevertheless, these improvements may potentially endanger the environment, due to soil erosion, inadequate drainage systems, sedimentation - potentially contaminating water sources, with adverse impacts on natural habitats. Mitigation measures call for: construction works to be conducted during the dry season as possible, to control erosion, and surface water contamination; careful attention on adequate drainage systems - located as close as possible to pumping stations - to control, and prevent soil erosion and water contamination; in particular, hazardous materials, including biomedical wastes, should follow strict standard guidelines - collection/treatment, storage, and disposal at appropriate sites - to prevent soil, and water pollution; limited daytime working schedules to abate noise disturbances; minimizing natural vegetation losses during construction, and, include vegetative propagation following construction, specifically with native species; appropriate maintenance, and cleaning of construction sites, including water spraying, to control dust emissions and air quality; and, particular attention to site selection, in an aim to protect natural habitats, agricultural lands, and regional water uses.
