Statement by Mrs. Helen Clark at the 94th meeting of the Development Committee held on October 8, 2016 (English)

This is a statement by Helen Clark, Administrator of the United Nations Development Program and Chair of the United Nations Development Group at the ninety-fourth meeting of the Development Committee held on October 8, 2016. He states that the number of people in situation of forced displacement has reached an unprecedented level since the end of World War two, which constitutes both a threat for hosts countries' stability and as many tragic individual situations. While the World Bank's scope of action has been considerably enlarged since 1945, migration phenomena bring the institution back to its initial objectives, namely territories' reconstruction and restoration of war-torn economies. The response to forced displacements meets the two-fold objective of ending extreme poverty by 2030 and promoting shared prosperity. In this context, it is essential that the World Bank continues and strengthens its actions in order to address both the humanitarian crisis, which is a consequence of forced displacement, and the protracted challenges that such situations create in host countries.
