Gambia - Electricity Support Project (English)

Ratings of Electricity Support Project for The Gambia were as follows: outcome was satisfactory, Bank performance was highly satisfactory, and monitoring and evaluation quality was substantial. Some of the lessons learned include: (i) An effective structure needs to be established to ensure that National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) conducts regular maintenance of its generating assets; (ii) Establish an effective sludge management system; (iii) Developing strong Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) practices; (iv) A functional grievance redress mechanism (GRM) at an institutional level is essential to ensure adverse project impacts can be addressed; (v) Keep it simple and flexible; (vi) Project Implementation Unit (PIU) staff should be dedicated to the project to ensure timely project implementation; and (vii) Strengthening assistance and building capacity in the areas of procurement and E&S safeguards in an fragile conflict and violence (FCV) environments are a key ingredient to ensure a successful implementation.
