Lesotho - Education Quality for Equality Project : Environmental Assessment : Environmental and Social Management Plan (English)

The development objective of the Education Quality for Equality Project for Lesotho is to improve basic education service delivery and student retention in targeted schools. Some of the negative impacts and mitigation measures include: (1) raise awareness of ensuring that the site goes back to its environmental status once all works are completed. Train school board for monitoring and ensuring corrective measures for waste generation and poor disposal of construction rubble; (2) include as part of site planning the proper selection of an area for toilet construction for outbreak of diseases due to poor hygiene; (3) provision of do not enter and do not pass signs and danger signs to ensure that the pits are protected during construction; (4) communication with the community through a sensitization by the school board to observe safety guidelines for risk of accidents in cases where the walkways pass through the school site; (5) ensure limited transportation of construction material during school hours and communicate such for preparedness; and (6) selection of activities that may be deemed to create dust to be undertaken early in the morning for combined schools or in the afternoons for primary schools.
