Colombia - Rio Frio Carbon Offset Project : environmental assessment (English)

The Rio Frio Carbon Offset Project for Colombia aims to contribute to reductions of greenhouse gas emissions from the wastewater treatment sector through modernization of the Rio Frio wastewater treatment plant, located in Giron, metropolitan area of Bucaramanga, Colombia, that will result in abatements of CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions. A share of the revenues from the emission reductions will be used to support a health program earmarked for vulnerable populations in the Giron municipality. All the proposed construction activities are categorized as minor works. There is ample experience in the Corporacion de Defensa de la Meseta de Bucaramanga (CDMB) in designing and supervising this type of activities. No major negative environmental impact is expected. Some of the mitigation measures of the project include: industrial safety plan; separation of contaminated soils; groundwater level control; adequate disposal of water used for cleaning; adequate disposal of cleaning materials, minimize waste generation; post information to downstream water users; and river quality and quantity monitoring.
