Kenya - Private Sector Power Generation Support Project : environmental assessment (Vol. 8) : Environmental audit on existing plant operations and construction works for expansion (English)

The objective of the Private Sector Power Generation Support Project for Kenya is to assist the borrower to meet growing short term demand in power generation by increasing electricity generation through Independent Power Producers (IPP) in the country. Negative impacts include: soil erosion, impact on flow, water quality, air quality, pollution from waste generation, noise and vibration, traffic disturbance, and health and safety. Mitigation measures include: 1) to prevent soil erosion all non-built up areas should be landscaped and appropriate soil bind grass planted; 2) any petroleum products stored on site must be stored in bunded areas to prevent contamination of surface water; 3) develop and implement effective measures for minimization of dust during the preconstruction and construction phase; 4) develop and implement safe procedures for management of non-hazardous and hazardous wastes; 5) ensure that contractor vehicles comply with axle load limits; 6) develop and implement a traffic management plan to take advantage of off-peak hours for delivery of construction materials and abnormal loads during the construction phase; and 7) develop and implement a contractor safety program.
