Limits to agricultural growth and relevant strategies for small farmer development (English)

The growth strategies for small farmer development available to any one country are limited. The alternatives are limited primarily by the basic resources situation, the rate of expansion in the non-agricultural sectors, and the export demand growth for agricultural raw materials and their derivatives. A mathematical model is developed to provide a quick and convenient means for analyzing alternatives to small farm development strategies that were grass roots specific, i.e. strategies that were related to specific small farmers that could be identified in country agricultural censuses, by location and type. The model analyzes these strategies under the constraint of growth in domestic demand, exports, and imports and determines the impact that alternative combinations of small farmer development and import-export strategies would have on small farm income and total farm income. The simulations indicate the range of strategy sets that could be analyzed. Finally, the model is relatively simple to run after the basic data are assembled and coded. Sensitivity analysis can be performed easily.
