Kenya - Urban Water and Sanitation OBA Fund for Low Income Areas Project : Environmental Assessment (Vol. 16) : Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for Thika Boreholes Development Project (English)

The development objective of the Urban Water and Sanitation Output Based Aid (OBA) Fund for Low Income Areas Project for Kenya is to increase the number of people in low income areas with access to improved water supply and sanitation services in Kenyan towns and cities. Some of the negative impacts and mitigation measures include: (1) proper solid waste management as per national environmental management authority (NEMA) waste management regulations; (2) control of dust and hydrocarbon fumes during trenching and excavation by wetting using water; (3) control noise to be within the recommended limits to avoid disturbance of neighbors; (4) use of physical barriers and labeled icons to prevent and warn the public on dangers of construction activities; (5) provision of a means to allow migration of fish and other aquatic organism upstream and downstream across the weir; (6) sensitize the public on consequences of accumulation of stagnant water near leakage points; and (7) the water supply management to be done using guidelines for water user association from the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Natural Resources.
