The objective of the Second Mopti Rice Project in Mali was to affect at full development about 13,000 families (90,000-100,000 people) in an area with an incremental paddy production of about 34,000 tons in an area of low economic activity. The project centered on: (a) construction of four polders (together, 8800 ha), (b) improvement of polders developed under the first rice project, (c) deep ploughing of the newly developed polders and of 14,285 ha of polder, (d) construction of stores, workshops, offices, houses, and training centers, (e) acquisition of vehicles, machinery, equipment, and two ferries, (f) an applied research and a credit program, and (g) technical assistance.
