Agriculture and agricultural research must play an essential role in the endeavor to eradicate poverty and hunger in the world. To this end the speaker provides her own contribution, and vision of prosperity through sustainable development, based on four related pillars: 1) revision of current challenges facing agricultural research; 2) partnerships and institutional arrangements needed in agricultural research and in policy-making to develop and meet the millennium challenges; 3) revision of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) approaches and structures, to adjust the overall vision for agricultural research to the challenges, and opportunities of the early 21st century; and, 4) actions Canada is undertaking through the Canadian International Development Agency in confronting these challenges and opportunities.
