This paper analyzes India's pricing and procurement policy for two major foodgrains: wheat and rice. Its main purpose is to provide a vigorous statistical analysis of the factors influencing the fixing of procurement prices, and the influence of the procurement price and other important factors on the volume of procurement. The paper also examines the effects of price movements on the output of wheat and rice, and the impact of zoning on interstate price dispersion.
