Morocco - Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project : restructuring (Vol. 2) : Data sheet (English)

The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project for Morocco development objective is to support the Government program to increase sustainable access to potable water supply in rural areas, while promoting improved wastewater management and hygiene practices. The closing date of the project will be extended from December 31, 2012 until November 30, 2014. The extension will allow the completion of the on-going works to develop 10 systems in the Safi and El Jadida provinces; the development of household connections in selected douars, the development of improved wastewater management pilots and hygiene promotion activities in some of the selected douars; and the implementation of two new systems in the province of Safi, which will be successfully installed during the proposed revised implementation period. The extended implementation timeline will also focus on strengthening the long term sustainability of the infrastructure developed throughout the life of the project, whether through water supply through standpipes, or through house connections. This will be the first extension of the project. Increasing difficulty to acquire land amicably and ONEP's (Office National de l'Eau Potable's) insistence to acquire land, through amicable agreement has contributed to delaying the launch of judicial procedure for expropriation.
