This project will finance: (i) road asset preservation activities including five-year management contracts for selected road sections in targeted islands (road rehabilitation) ; and (ii) Technical Assistance (TA) activities aimed at providing the Government with the information needed to pursue the transport sector reform agenda. The main environmental and social impacts identified are: impacts on vegetation: the recurrence to extraction areas for construction materials for infrastructures could lead to the cutting of trees; deforestation and reduction of vegetation cover, due to possible recurrence to quarries and extraction areas; environmental pollution by waste derived from construction works; noise pollution due to the movement of trucks and excavation equipment; air pollution, soil, surface water, and groundwater pollution; social conflicts derived from public or private land occupation; risk of damage on built heritage (networks infrastructures: water, energy, sanitation, telecommunications); risk of accidents during the construction period; interference with traffic. Mitigation measure include: information of population, protection of ecosystem, install drainage for used water, limit the destruction of current houses.
