Bosnia and Herzegovina - Additional Financing for the Second Solid Waste Management Project : environmental assessment (Vol. 3) : Environmental framework and management plan (English)

The objectives of the Additional Financing for the Second Solid Waste Management Project for Bosnia and Herzegovina are to: (a) improve solid waste services cost effectively in participating priority areas; (b) increase administrative and technical capacity for solid waste management at the local and entity level; (c) improve the cost recovery mechanism of the sector to encourage private sector involvement; and (d) correct environmental problems and reduce health hazards caused by inadequate waste collection and disposal systems. Some of the negative and mitigation measures include: i) utilize newer vehicles and ensure proper maintenance; ii) cleaning of vehicles after dumping of waste; iii) use of closed vehicles or protective cover on the container; iv) mandate use of a standard waste container type suited to the automatic lifting onto the vehicle. If not, mandate use of smaller waste bins adequate for manual loading; v) improvement of collection services to include the majority of the local population education of local population; and vi) sealing off leachate in the landfill, collection of leachate and proper monitoring.
