Bank policy on agricultural credit (English)

Credit is often a key issue in the modernization of agriculture as it removes a financial constraint and also facilitates the adoption of new technologies. The existing data on the Bank's policy in the area of agricultural credit have serious shortcomings which need to be rectified. Bank credit projects have provided for processing and marketing farm produce, forestry development, fishing enterprises, technical assistance, feasibility studies, project preparation, and other institutional assistance. However, the most critical aspect in Bank lending concerns on-farm development. Raising farmer productivity and improving rural incomes depends on such factors as the availability of complementary inputs and services, sound credit policies, well-managed institutions, and appropriate delivery channels. Little information is available on the impact on agricultural credit policy, but assessment is essential to developing future policy that best benefits the sector and therefore the economy as a whole.
