The Tocantins Integrated and Sustainable regional Development Project will cover 72 municipalities in the western half of the State. It will aim, on the one hand, at improving access of peripheral regions to the market through improving the road and transportation network and, on the other, at strengthening the capacity of the public sector to create an environment that enables and stimulates productive investments in the State and social and economic inclusion of all productive sectors and regions. Its objective is to improve the efficiency of transportation by road and the quality of selected state public services. The scope of the project relates to the challenges posed by two main components of state policies: socioeconomic integration and the logistic strategy to build a reliable transportation system. In this context, the goals of the PDRIS are improved access to public services and better road transport together with environmental conservation, elimination of critical bottlenecks, improved safety and stretches of access to the national transportation network. Direct potential impacts may come from rehabilitation and surfacing works. Such impacts are expected to be minor as are the impacts resulting from the construction phase. The project may have indirect impacts on land use, as well as on riparian vegetation in water crossings. In accordance with the potential impacts adequate mitigation and monitoring measures will be established.
