Tanzania - Industrial and mining sector survey (Vol. 3) : Current status and development prospects of engineering and basic metal industries and current status and development prospects of the textile industry (English)

At this time of important international economic changes, Tanzania faces new challenges and opportunities as well as serious problems and uncertainties. This survey attempts to contribute to the discussion of direction, size, and phasing of the long-term structural economic adjustments which will be required. Its central theme is the need for greater efficiency in the pursuit of already agreed-upon social and economic objectives. The main report deals largely with the efficiency of current production and with institutional issues. Separate annexes on mining, metal engineering, and textile manufacturing focus more in particular on the direction of future investment in those subsectors. The restructuring of Tanzania's incentive framework so as to make it consistent with the country's social objectives as well as increasing productivity is one of the most difficult tasks facing economic policy makers. The survey suggests that a change in the direction of market socialism might be compatible with Tanzania's development objectives and conducive to greater efficiency and industrial development.
