Mozambique - Temane Regional Electricity Project : Environmental Assessment (Vol. 6) : Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (English)

The development objectives of the Temane Regional Electricity Project for Mozambique are to increase electricity generation capacity with private sector participation and to enhance transmission capacity for domestic and regional market. Some of the negative impacts and mitigation measures include: (1) speed limits for construction heavy vehicles should not exceed 30 kilometer per hour near residential areas; (2) the sitting of transmission facilities must seek to avoid to the maximum extent possible areas of high irrigation suitability; (3) restrict vegetation clearing and topsoil removal to the areas strictly required for construction; (4) avoid the movement of machinery on river beds and floodplain areas, as much as possible; (5) promote the selection of areas with less of a need for tree cutting for temporary work and storage areas; (6) strictly limit the clearing of vegetation to the required areas, particularly in areas of natural habitats; (7) avoid movement of heavy machinery in wetlands, river banks, river beds, and waterbodies; (8) vegetation removal activities should be accompanied by an ecology and biology specialist, to minimize as much as possible the death of tree roosting animals; and (9) develop and implement a compensation plan, to adequately compensate for any losses of crops due to powerline construction.
