Report on the mission to Honduras (English)

Honduras is a country with an area of 150,000 square kilometers and a population of 105 million. The terrain is mountainous, except on the North Coast, where the banana plantations of united fruit and standard fruit are located. The population in the interior lives in numerous separated valleys, which are interconnected, if at all, by very poor highways. The Honduran people are mostly 'mestizo' (90 percent of the total); the majority, 63 percent according to a recent estimate, is illiterate. This report includes the following headings: work of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) mission; establishment of the Banco Nacional de Fomento (BNF); operations of the BNF; economic development and the BNF; and results of the mission.
