The project consists of two hydroelectric stations, namely a 220-MW pumped storage station with the associated 128 meter rockfill dam and a reservoir at Nagano, and a 54 MW conventional-type hydro station at Yugami. It is a part of an overall development plan for the Kuzuryu river to be jointly carried out by EPDC and the Hokuriku Electric Power Company which will build a third power station downstream. The project will provide much needed peaking capacity for the large interconnected system in the fastest growing industrial region of Japan. In addition, the project will provide seasonal regulation of the river for operation of downstream plants, and some additional storage capacity for flood control purposes in the area.
