Since the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in January 2020,plastic pollution around the world has signicantly increased with substantial demand for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which is made from polypropylene (PP), a single-use plastic is needed for face shields and masks. The magnitude of the increase in plastic waste due to the pandemic is still unknown but estimates suggest most of the global discharge into the ocean of hospital waste alone is from Asia. The purpose of this knowledge brief is to explore the gender dimensions of four stages of the marine plastic management value chain; production, consumption, solid waste management and marine plastic debris. The brief draws out key findings from a six-country study including Cambodia,Laos PDR, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and VietNam and contributes to the emerging evidence base on the role of gender in marine plastic management. The brief targets practitioners and policy makers working to promote gender responsive marine plastic management policies, strategies and programmes in East Asia and the Pacific.
