The objective of this study is to identify and assess the various fuel options available to Thailand to meet its energy requirements over the next decade or two. The need for such an assessment stems from the increasing demand for energy due to rapid economic growth, the limited expansion of domestic energy resources, and government concerns about the environmental impact of energy production and utilization as well as the security of supply. This study examines the present status and possibilities of piped gas, liquefied natural gas, lignite, coal, oil and nuclear energy; it provides a fuel strategy based on identifying the most appropriate fuels, as well as where, at what cost and under what conditions they should be obtained to best meet the country's energy needs in different time frames. While attempts were made to confine the investigation to energy supply options, a broader review of the sector was inevitable, particulary with regard to appropriate pricing policies, institutional arrangements and investments needed to implement and sustain the recommended strategy.
