Afghanistan - Agricultural Inputs Project : environmental assessment (Vol. 2) : Pest and pesticide management plan (Inglês)

The development objective of the Agricultural Inputs Project for Afghanistan is to strengthened institutional capacity for safety and reliability of agricultural inputs and sustainable production of certified wheat seed. Negative impacts includes: affects human health; temporary or permanent loss of crops; loss of fruit trees; landscape degradation; soil degradation; air, water, and noise pollution; contamination from wastes; increase incidence of disease such as malaria and cholera; risk of drainage failure and adverse effects on flora and fauna. Mitigation measures includes: 1) proper drainage of the area. Link to other agencies (government and NGOs) working on health issues in the locality so that improved health care practices can be introduced to/adopted by local communities; 2) plantation of appropriate vegetation on hill slopes and other potentially erodible places; 3) appropriate earth compaction and in construction of access roads; 4) restriction of vehicular and construction machinery movements when necessary; 5) install sediment runoff control devices; 6) ensure contractors comply with contract provisions for restoring landscape; 7) all solid wastes to be collected and removed from the camp sites and disposed in local waste disposal sites; 8) provide adequate protective devices, drinking water and sanitary facilities to workers; 9) community awareness on use of pesticides and agro-chemicals in agricultural fields close to canal; and 10) regular spraying of water in the materials mixing and handling areas/temporary access roads.
