This annual report covers the calendar 1996 activities of the Energy Sector Management Assistance Programme (ESMAP), jointly sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Bank. After an introduction to ESMAP activities, chapter 2 discusses ESMAP operations in detail. In 1996, ESMAP operations has focused on six principal issues: 1) energy efficiency; 2) energy and environment; 3) energy sector reform; 4) energy trade; 5) rural and household energy; and 6) renewable energy. Chapter 3 reviews the evolution of ESMAP~^!!^s management and the Programme~^!!^s financial position. The report also contains several annexes: Annex 1 reproduces the ESMAP Consultative Group~^!!^s 1996 communiqu� Annex 2 provides data on ESMAP activities during calendar year 1996. Annex 3 provides a comprehensive listing of ESMAP~^!!^s report on completed activities. Annex 4, intended as a briefing note in preparation for discussions at the year~^!!^s roundtable on energy and development, summarizes ESMAP~^!!^s strategy for tackling vital energy-efficiency issues and related environmental concerns.
