Guyana - Current economic position and prospects (Vol. 2) : Agriculture (Inglês)

The government is reshaping the form and content of economic policy because of its concern with the high and seemingly intractable level of unemployment (12-14 percent of the labor force) , particularly among urban residents. It is also motivated by the desire for greater equity and wider participation in economic activity among Guyanese. On February 23, 1970, Guyana proclaimed itself a Cooperative Republic to emphasize its political and economic independence in achieving its economic and social goals and to stress the importance attached to the cooperative form of economic organization as an instrument of development. In particular, the Government plans to use the cooperative as a spearhead for the accelerated development of certain regions in the interior. Guyana’s known resources are modest. Economic activity is concentrated on here basic commodities, bauxite and related products, sugar and rice.
