The Water Quality Protection Project seeks to reduce the general pollution of the Neretva and Bosna Rivers, within the Adriatic and Black Sea basins, the pollution resulting from releases of municipal wastewater. This report summarizes the findings and recommendations in the Environmental Assessment (EA), which was prepared in strict compliance with the requirements of the country's legislation, and the Bank's operational policies and procedures on the environment. On the basis of potential adverse impacts, the project has been rated as category A. An essential part of the EA focuses on four areas regarding proposed subprojects, describing project areas, baseline data, analysis of alternatives, identified environmental impacts, and the environmental management plan, with an overview of the different project alternatives, and mitigation measures. Most short term impacts on the environment are expected to occur during the construction phase, although no negative impacts on natural habitats are foreseen, particularly given the expected improvements in the water quality of the related watercourses, which in turn, will conduce to biodiversity and ecosystems protection. Conclusions suggest that the overall long term positive effects of the investment at the four identified project sites, far exceed any short term effects, mostly minor negative impacts related to facility rehabilitation and construction that may occur.
