This report consists of data from the major metropolitan regions of Brazil in 1985 that provide previously unavailable information on families' child care arrangement for 0-6 year olds and on the connection between those child care strategies and parental and household characteristics. Descriptive statistics are provided for all of Metropolitan Brazil, metropolitan regions in the Northeast and North regions combined, those in the Southeast and South regions combined, and for Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo separately. The results are discussed in the context of public and private provision of child care of different types. Family and societal costs and benefits of child care alternatives are discussed, as are rationales for government intervention in the market for child care. This report emphasizes that the provision of daycare as a service to mothers and other family caretakers deserves attention as a prerequisite to improving women's status in Brazil.
