India - Rajasthan State Highways Project : sectoral environmental assessment (Vol. 2) (Inglês)

The Rajasthan State Highways Project aims to improve and strengthen selected roadways. This sectoral environmental assessment identifies potential impacts and proposes mitigation and the implementing agencies. During construction, air and noise pollution will be mitigated by spraying water and by maintaining vehicles and construction machinery regularly so that emission and noise will meet national standards. During alteration of existing road embankments, less erodable material will be selected particularly around bridges and culverts to ensure stabilization. In slopes along the road side, trees and grass will be planted to mitigate soil erosion. Tree removals will be minimized by restricting it to what is directly required for construction activities. Borrow pits can cause drainage problems and disease vector activities. Thus, borrow pits will be located outside the right-of-ways and restoration of the pits will follow the completion of works in full compliance with the Indian Roads Congress specifications. To mitigate the impact of water saltation, construction materials containing fine particles will be stored in an enclosure so that sediment-laden water does not drain into nearby watercourses, but rather percolates slowly into the soil. Urban drainage systems will be periodically checked and cleared so as to ensure adequate storm water flow.
