The development objective of this project is to promote an integrated ecosystem management (IEM) approach to guide the development, and implementation of sustainable land management (SLM) practices, in a geographical area containing highly threatened biodiversity of global importance, to support long-term conservation, and rehabilitation of agro-ecosystems. The global environmental objectives are to: a) address threats to biodiversity of global importance, b) reverse land degradation in agricultural landscapes, c) enhance carbon sequestration, and, d) increase awareness at all levels of the value of adopting an IEM approach in the management of natural resources. This environmental assessment identifies potential adverse environmental aspects, and provides the mitigation measures as follows. The criteria for the protection of soil erosion stipulates the need for training personnel, particularly in terracing practices, and, for field visits following the rainy season. The project design ensures biodiversity conservation through best practices in agricultural pest control (determining adequate application of fertilizers), for stagnant water potentially conducive to erosion and/or contamination, and for improved water supply systems. Water quality analysis will be conducted regularly, and in the long-term, to minimize water pollution. Protected areas will be taken into consideration, and soil and water resources will be improved as needed, including agricultural areas, but taking into account the appropriate use of agro-chemicals.
