The Ferghana Valley Water Resources Management Project will help the GOT improve the overall state of water management and irrigated agriculture in Soghd Oblast, the Tajik portion of the Ferghana valley. The project does not involve mitigation for forested or woodland areas; no conversion of natural areas or critical natural habitats; no indigenous peoples, ethnic minorities or tribal groups; the project will not be implemented in a disputed areas. The objective of the environmental assessment and management plan (EAMP) is to identify significant environmental and social impacts and recommend mitigation measures to eliminate or minimize any anticipated adverse impacts. The mitigation measures are : inclusion in contracts of environmental, health, and safety covenants required by Tajikistan legislation; installation of fish protection devices (screens or nets) at intake pipes, and pumping stations to prevent damage to fish; organization of community outreach and public awareness campaigns on water conservation and environmental management issues; preservation of natural landscape and restoration of damage; prevention of accidental spillage of contaminants, debris, or other pollutants into streams or underground water resources; disposal of waste, debris, and hazardous materials to minimize harm to air, soil nor ground water supply; and minimize dust from the handling or transporting of aggregates, cement, etc., by spraying water.
