Kenya - Electricity Expansion Project : environmental assessment (Vol. 14) : Project Report for the proposed Mihingoni, Kwa Balozi, Kwa Jahazi, Kinani and Birini-Mwamleka 33 kV power distribution line (Inglês)

The objectives of the Electricity Expansion Project for Kenya are to: (a) increase access to electricity in urban, peri-urban and rural areas; and (b) improve the efficiency, reliability and quality of service to consumers, while sustaining the policy, institutional and regulatory environment needed for these results to materialize. Negative impacts include: terrestrial habitat alteration; power line related avifauna mortalities; soil erosion; air pollution (dust, fuel emissions); water pollution; management of solid waste; risk of fire; and noise pollution. Mitigation measures include: 1) re-vegetation of disturbed areas with native plant species, undertake selective clearance by removing tall woody species leaving saplings, for quick regeneration of vegetation along the way-leave; 2) minimizing clearing and disruption to riparian vegetation; 3) soils excavated for the erection of towers should be used for re-filling and should not be left exposed to wind or water for long periods; 4) riverside vegetation should be minimally disturbed during the construction phase to reduce soil erosion and safeguard riverbank protection; 5) control speed of construction vehicles, prohibit idling of vehicles, and provision of dust masks for use when working in dusty conditions; 6) contractor must dispose solid wastes away from the site to an approved disposal site; 7) use of designated areas for repair and maintenance of machinery e.g. garages to avoid fuels and lubricant spills at the camp-site.; 8) noise reduction/hearing protection devices when working with noisy equipment; and 9) provide appropriate hand, respiratory, and body protective devices.
