Mali - Emergency Safety Nets Project ('Jigisemejiri') : summary of discussion (Inglês)

Executive Directors approved the grant for the Emergency Safety Nets Project ('Jigisemejiri') for the Republic of Mali in the amount of SDR 46.3 million on the payment terms and conditions set out in the President's Memorandum. Directors expressed strong support for the project in the context of Mali's reconciliation process and recovery from a difficult post conflict situation, as it rebuilds macroeconomic stability and growth. More broadly, they encouraged the Bank to use Mali as a case from which to learn and strengthen how the Bank builds effective long-term engagement with fragile countries, as well as in affected neighboring countries. In terms of the project, they welcomed its strategic role to provide targeted cash transfers to the poor and food insecure households for a comprehensive and effective National social safety net system. Directors welcomed the accompanying measures related to health and education to maximize the benefits of cash transfers, including preventive care for children and pregnant women, and highlighted the role of women in this context. Directors noted the risks involved in the project and called for close monitoring and evaluation during implementation. In this regard, they reiterated the need to build local and institutional capacity through community dialogue.
