Zambia - Lusaka Sanitation Project : Environmental Assessment : Environmental and Social Impact Assessment Report for Priority (Year 1) Sewerage Works (Inglês)

The development objective of the Lusaka Sanitation Project for Zambia is to increase access to sanitation services in selected areas of Lusaka such as Kafue Road, Emmasdale, Chaisa and Mandevu and strengthen LWSC’s capacity to manage sanitation services. Some of the negative impacts include: (i) air pollution due to emission of gases and dust; (ii) noise vibration; (iii) soil quality and erosion; (iv) impact on flora; (v) loss of structures/ properties and income/ business, relocation and effects on existing structures; (vi) Road blockage, degradation due to excavation, effect on transportation, traffic congestion, disturbance to vehicular and pedestrian movements, chances of accidents; (vii) drainage flooding; (viii) impact of sanitation; (ix) waste and hazardous materials; an d (x) workers health safety. Some of the mitigation measures include: (i) open burning should be prohibited; (ii) the pump sets should be enclosed within complete acoustic enclosure; (iii) work schedule shall be avoided during heavy rainfall period; (iv) dust control techniques should be implemented; (v) the compensation for damage due to storage yards and workers’ camp sites should be fair, adequate and as per the requirement of government of Zambia (GRZ); (vi) damages caused to roads due to heavy vehicle transportation, excavation works, blasting etc. must be repaired after completion of the construction activities; (vii) construction activities should not be carried out during heavy rains; (viii) during construction as well as maintenance period, temporary sewer bypass routes should be constructed; (ix) solid waste must be disposed in pre-designated proper disposal site, prior to ultimate land filling; and (x) regular safety checks for vehicle and machineries should be arranged by work contractor.
