Pakistan - Natural Gas Efficiency Project : environmental assessment : Environmental and social management framework : main text (Inglês)

The development objective of the Natural Gas Efficiency Project is to enhance the supply of natural gas in Pakistan by reducing the physical and commercial losses of gas in the pipeline system. Negative impacts include: cutting of trees; loss of vegetation/plantation; exhaust fumes from vehicles and construction machinery; dust; traffic; noise; leakages of gas may cause damage to soil and pollute ambient air; and pollution. Mitigation measures include: 1) use of steel pipeline where polyethylene (PE) may not used technically or due to financial constraints; 2) planning for relocation of large/grown up trees, and re-plantation of new trees after completion of construction work; 3) all equipment, generators and vehicles used during the project will be properly tuned and maintained in good working condition, in order to minimize the exhaust emissions; 4) dust emissions at the construction sites will be minimized by implementing good housekeeping and sound management practices; 5) vehicular traffic will be minimized through good journey management. Water will be sprinkled where necessary; 6) minimum soil cover depth of buried sections of pipeline shall be of one meter; and 7) provision of Cathodic protection system and coating of pipeline with three layers of polyethylene coating for protection against corrosion.
