Despite being one of the poorest countries in the world at its independence in 1966, Botswana has grown very quickly since this. Although this is partly due to abundant natural resources (especially diamonds), good policies and strong institutions have played an important role. Most growth, however, has been heavily concentrated in the mining sector while manufacturing's share of GDP has declined modestly despite the government's concerted efforts to promote economic diversification. Macroeconomic instability is perceived as the second most restrictive factor to the investment climate, despite Botswana's reputation for excellent macroeconomic management, modest inflation, and extremely rapid growth. The timing of the survey probably impacted the results, due to a burst of inflation at the time of the survey due to the devaluation of the pula.
