This Results Profile deals with building business and women labor markets in India. The women succeeded with a grant from a Community Investment Fund, and a loan from the local bank, their enterprise took shape. There are nearly four million poor families in Andhra Pradesh and the state has the largest number of child workers in India. Many are girls from poor families who drop out of school to help support their families. The project has helped create self-managed grassroots institutions. It also supports initiatives that these organizations propose to help start economic activity among the poorest people, and improve access to education for girls. The project pays special attention to the needs and priorities of women, who form 95 percent of the community groups.
