This annual report of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) presents the work of the organization, outlining the creation of a new entity, designed to build support for international agricultural research, called Future Harvest, focused on food, and environmental research. During 1999, CGIAR focused on the challenge of rural development to overcome rural poverty, through perspectives on agriculture and science, conducting research on forest policy implementation, water resources, and agricultural biotechnology. The report highlights the work of its research centers, featuring investments in agricultural research, employment generation in agriculture, food security, and, independent studies demonstrate attractive rates of return from such research. An overview of the power of inter-center collaboration shows the collaborative work in integrated gene management, crop and livestock synergies, and the relevance of research capacity, through training and learning. The year's financial highlights provide information on its contribution profile, disbursement schedule, and allocation support by centers.
