The report builds a brief review of problems encountered in key sectors among Latin American countries, and features current gender issues and problems, as the basis for discussion, and action. Furthermore, it serves as well, as the starting point for creating, and/or strengthening programs and services focused on gender issues, and development. The Bank is interested in participating, and working with counterparts in the various Central American countries - i.e., governments, and nongovernmental organizations - to promote gender equality through its policies, and projects. The varying (though high) indicators among Central American countries, in particular Guatemala, with the greatest gender gaps, mostly due to the fact that indigenous populations constitute the majority of the population, specify the need to focus on maternal and child, health care, but most importantly on sexual and reproductive indicators, to formulate programs that would encompass education for women, through social processes comprising gender equality as a means to enhance women's professional development. Specifically, the report reviews the impact of alcohol consumption, and violence to women, where typically women are victims to domestic violence, and according to statistics, predominantly in Central America, within the Latin American context. Surprisingly, in terms of labor, while men and women do perform distinct and different jobs, there is somehow a certain equity within technical and professional categories, favorably compared with the industrialized nations of Great Britain and the United States, suggesting education as the key factor to overcome gender gaps. However, and despite the fact that child labor has decreased, gender gaps still remain not favoring girls, showing the percentage of girls attending school is much lower than boys, obviously a reflection of poverty incidence.
