The World Bank Institute's (WBI's) work in facilitating, and enabling learning is at the heart of capacity building, and it plays a key role, both in furthering assistance strategies in specific countries, and in carrying out more broadly-based programs, that have a regional, or global focus. Within this framework, this WBI annual report looks at the year in retrospect, through the delivery of training activities, and its many delivery media, and facets, i.e., learning centers, knowledge networks, distance learning, including the delivery of courses, and seminars, and provision of scholarships and fellowships. It also looks at the promotion of professional development, and skills training opportunities for Bank staff, thus ensuring the operational relevance of Bank skills. Highlights of fiscal 2001, thus include investing in new information, and communications technology, and making greater use of distance learning; taking a more strategic approach to partnerships; and, matching WBI programs more closely to the Bank's operational priorities. The WBI broadened its outreach to larger numbers of people using distance learning, building networks, and communities of practice, to narrow the digital divide. The report also reviews the approaches to capacity building through its workshops and programs addressing subjects such as social protection, and pension reforms, and, providing policy services, and development debates, which included from gender issues, to financial management subjects, and, looks at accelerating new technologies, by increasing partnerships with learning institutions. Included are the FY00/01 budget, and organizational chart.
