Benin - Emergency Food Security Support Project : environmental assessment : Cadre de gestion environnementale et sociale (Francês)

The overall objective of the Emergency Program for Support of Food Security is to assist producers to increase domestic food production in the short term. Specifically, these include: a) stockpiling consumer food products to put on the market during the lean season to reduce pressure on prices; b) producing short-term adequate supply of food in order to stifle or at least mitigate the adverse impact of the crisis on the quality of life of both urban and rural populations; 3) developing a strategic reserve of food security, especially with regard to rice and corn. Inappropriate farming practices contribute to the degradation of environment, particularly in soils by the accentuation of the phenomena of erosion, loss of fertility, and drainage areas. Potential negative impacts of pesticide use include: Declining fertility, acidification and pollution of the soil; pollution (nitrates, ammonium NH4); changing pH and deforestation; making pests resistant to chemical control; poisoning of humans and even death. In addition, there may be conflicts between herders and farmers with the development of agricultural areas and an increase in waterborne diseases.
