The objectives of Public Works and Urban Management Project for Burundi are to: (i) increase access for people in general to sustainable infrastructure services and (ii) generate short-term jobs through public works programs to intensive labor work (HIMO). Negative environmental impacts of the project include: in terms of construction materials, potential impacts are: major risks of environmental damage (erosion, soil sterilization) related to the exploitation of quarries; risk of non-rehabilitation of quarries; risk of overexploitation of forests; and natural resources. At site level, the potential impacts are: risk of erosion downstream depending on the topography; soil degradation; infringement biotopes specific in terms of fauna and flora; production of uncontrolled waste; and sewage pollution. During the construction phase, potential impacts are: air pollution linked to transport; and induced degradation. Finally, during post-construction, environmental and social risks are: trampling, more roads and trails access encroaching on agricultural land; and source of erosion. For business, there may be particular nuisance with chips and lumber products for a carpenter or to a dyer.
