This document is the address to the Board of Governors presented by Mr. James D. Wolfensohn, the president of the World Bank Group, in Prague, Czech Republic, on September 26, 2000. The speech points out the objective of the World Bank to improve the quality of life and reduce poverty through sustainable and equitable growth. To make progress in fighting poverty, one must build a new internationalism. To match a globalize economy, the developing and developed countries, international institutions, civil society in all its forms, and the private sector must work together as partners. The Bank needs to focus on: a) increasing aid from developed countries; b) providing the resources for deeper, faster, and broader debt relief; c) dismantling trade barriers to poor countries; d) exploring innovative instruments, including grants, for such pressing issues as HIV/AIDS, the environment, basic education, and health; e) multilateral and bilateral donors working together to simplify their procedures and reducing the cost of doing business; and f) recognizing that more and more issues resolution requires action at the global level.
