The Benin Increased Access to Modern Energy project's objectives are to improve the operational efficiency of the transmission and distribution system and to increase access to electricity. The project will enable Benin to take advantage of the EEEAONVAPP West African power exchange system from the Sakete station, interconnected with lkeja in Nigeria. It is also a development factor for the various areas crossed by the transmission line. The major impacts of the project on both the areas and human activities are the following: The positive impacts relate to the increase in electric power supply in the northern regions of Benin; employment of the local workforce generating incomes for the population groups during the construction and operation, improvement of local movements through the establishment of longitudinal pathways. In the long run, the connection to electricity for the population groups bordering the line will be an indirect positive impact of the Project. The prospects of economic and social development expected are positive. The negative impacts during the construction phase relate to: a) physical and chemical degradation of soils and erosion; b) disruption of surface water physical and chemical characteristics; c) risks of impacts on mineral resources; d) temporary disruption of the fauna; e) damages to crops during the construction phase; f) possible risks for health and security of affected population groups; and g) site nuisances.
