The objectives of the Morupule B Generation and Transmission Project are to expand domestic power generation capacity that will support sustained economic growth in Botswana; and build institutional capacity for sustainable development of the energy sector. Negative measures include: loss of top soil, ground water pollution due to hydrocarbon spillage, air quality, flora and fauna, and increase in noise pollution during construction. Mitigation measures include: a) all vehicles and equipment should be monitored and maintained in good working order; b) all sirens should have appropriate directional and volume settings; c) maintenance of vehicles should only be carried out in designated areas within towns or in the construction camp; d) materials capable of resulting in poor quality leachates will not be used for the construction of roads or other infrastructure; e) number and extent of borrow pits should be kept to the minimum possible for the economic supply of construction materials; f) roads should be constructed with calcrete or laterite, which will maintain its form for longer; g) to preserve as much of the animals' habitats as possible; and h) to prevent the loss of a viable seed bank in the stockpiled topsoil.
