The objectives of the Rural Electrification Expansion Project for Tanzania are: (i) to increase the number of rural electricity connections; and (ii) scale-up renewable electricity generation in rural areas. Some of the negative impacts and mitigation measures include: ensure sustainability, security and the equitable use of resources without degrading the environment or risking health or safety; prevent and control degradation of land, water, vegetation and air; conserve and enhance the natural and manmade heritage, including biological diversity of the unique ecosystems of Tanzania; improve the condition and productivity of degraded areas, including rural and urban settlements; raise public awareness and understanding of the essential linkages between environment and development, and promote individual and community participation in environmental action; and promote international cooperation on the environmental agenda.
