Madagascar - The economy of the Malagasy Republic : L'economie de la Republique Malgache (Francês)

This economic report points out that economic growth in the Malagasy Republic has averaged only about 3 percent annually over the past decade, or only slightly more than estimated population growth. This has been due to a comparatively low investment rate, and a natural environment which makes investment costs high relative to most other developing countries. Nevertheless, the country has some important assets which should make possible a more rapid growth rate in the future. Its export base is well diversified, and there are opportunities for further expansion in this sector. Moreover, there are possibilities for sizeable increases in output for the domestic market. The report concludes that until the country's income growth rate can be speeded up to a point where more rapid increases in national savings become possible, it would be desirable for the bulk of public capital inflow to continue to be made available on a grant or soft loan basis.
