The development objective of the (CRL) Rural Electrification Project for Mexico is to increase access to efficient and sustainable integrated energy services in -predominantly indigenous- rural areas and improve the quality of life and promote the economic development of targeted rural communities. This Environmental Assessment (EA) document evaluated impacts. However, environmental impacts are minimal, due to the fact that generation of renewable solar energy does not generates adverse impacts to the environment. The following impacts and minimal : generation of residues (ashes); Diesel generator leaks; disposal of used batteries and solar panels; vegetation and trees clearance; erosion due to access roads traffic; flora and fauna; disposal of solid waste materials, also minimal; false expectation among the local population of generation of employment, because the installation of solar panels only requires technical and experienced personnel; and finally, applicability of environmental laws, decrees and policies of the State of Oxaca, general law for ecological equilibrium and environmental protection by the Ministry of the Environment / Secretaria de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT), and compliance with international conventions relatives to the protection of the environment of which Mexico is a signatory, and the Bank's operational safeguard directives on the environment, natural habitats, forestry, and cultural property.
