Malawi - Drought Recovery and Resilience Project : Environmental Assessment : Environmental and Social Management Framework (Inglês)

The development objective of the Drought Recovery and Resilience Project for Malawi is to support the Government of Malawi to meet the immediate food security and livelihoods restoration needs of the communities affected by drought and promote recovery and resilience in key affected sectors. Some of the negative impacts and mitigation measures include: (1) promote the use of energy efficient cooking stoves for workers; (2) migrant workers to ensure clean outer garments and personal effects to get rid of alien plants and seeds; (3) regenerate natural vegetation in all borrow pits after construction works to reduce soil erosion; (4) ensure sensitization of the communities on dangers of haphazard brick making and sand mining; (5) proper storage facilities for oils and fuels diesel and minimize spillage - bunded containment where necessary. Minimize spillage from machinery on site through proper maintenance, procedures for handling, and storing oils and fuels; (6) provision of appropriate pit latrines for construction workers giving consideration to soil types and distance to nearest surface water sources; and (7) use of well-maintained vehicles and construction equipment to reduce pollution.
