Tanganyika - Current economic position and prospects (Inglês)

Tanganyika is a large, equatorial country on the East Coast of Africa. A considerable part of the country is an arid high plateau with low soil productivity and infested with the tsetse fly. The dynamic force in the economy is its increasing sale of primary products abroad. Despite lower prices, export receipts, chiefly from sisal, cotton, coffee, nuts and diamonds, increased 50 percent between 1954 and 1960, and the growth of the money economy more or less paralleled this expansion. Tanganyika's performance has been good and she is certainly one of the countries with a very low per capita income. She has her major development effort still ahead of her. In sum, while she should still have some margin for further conventional debt, the emphasis should increasingly be put; on the securing of aid on soft terms.
