Problems of applying stable population techniques in estimating demographic measures for Arab countries (Inglês)

The effect of a recent decline in mortality on the estimates of birth rates when the stable population method is used due to the absence of reliable birth registration statistics. The stable population method assumes a constant mortality level, which may be an invalid assumption. A procedure is described for adjusting the estimate of the birth rate for the effects of mortality decline that requires fewer parameters than previous methods and that requires no standard table of mortality corrections. The procedure is applicable to any developing country in which fertility has been relatively constant. Statistical and demographic data are included. 4 references.
